Pledges are Generally Binding
In most cases, once pledges are made they are committed for the duration of a campaign.
Pledge Authorization Window
Processing of pledges may begin without further re-authorization when a campaign is successful within 6 months of the pledge being made.
Any pledge toward a campaign that is successful more than 6 months after that pledge was initially placed may be withdrawn. This is an opt-out provision and the responsibility lies with pledging Fans to monitor campaigns they have pledged to and alert us if they believe they have an eligible pledge they wish to withdraw or alter.
Limited Withdrawal Exceptions
6+ Months
Any pledge toward a campaign that is successful more than 6 months after that pledge was initially placed may be withdrawn. This is an opt-out provision and the responsibility lies with pledging Fans to monitor campaigns they have pledged to and alert us if they believe they have an eligible pledge they wish to withdraw or alter.
Significant Changes to Campaign
When a campaign is significantly changed after a pledge has been made–as determined by a vote of pledging Fans–the right to withdraw will be offered. (covered previously above here)
Limited Access Rewards Unavailable
When Fans are unable to secure access to a limited reward which was the primary goal of a campaign and which their existing pledge would have otherwise covered they may request a withdrawal.
Example A:
A Fan pledges $100 toward a campaign for tickets to a special one night concert.
Subsequently, tickets are offered with a limited number available for $25 each.
Here, the Fan’s original pledge would cover the $25 reward tier so if the fan is unable to secure access to 4 of the limited tickets (fans are always initially limited to 4 of any limited tier rewards, until all fans who pledged have had a chance to secure them) they may request a withdrawal of their entire pledge if the tickets run out before their ‘spot in line’ came up.
This is true even if the Creator offers non-limited bonus rewards—perhaps concert T-shirts also for $25.
Since the central goal of the campaign—the ‘thing itself’—was the concert not a commemorative shirt, the Fan can withdraw their entire pledge even though there are other generally available rewards.
Example B:
A Fan pledges $100 toward a campaign for a board game.
Subsequently, rewards are offered at $100 for a limited edition version but also at $50 for the non-limited, standard version laid out in the campaign itself.
Here, the Fans pledge does cover the $100 limited reward tier however, even if the Fan is unable to secure one of the limited editions, since they do have access to the $50 reward which was the central goal of the campaign, the Fan is not permitted to withdraw their pledge—they must reshuffle their existing pledge instead.
Matters of Conscience
Sometimes what changes is the Fan community’s understanding & awareness of the Creator’s beliefs or actions, or of the cultural/political/social/moral/ethical/philosophical context of the campaign etc.
These changes can present really difficult situations for Fans who have previously pledged and now may feel that their pledge would be financially supporting a Creator or campaign that they find objectionable on serious personal grounds.
We do not intend the Fan community to be a moral jury, or to unfairly ask any Fans to bear the burden of time and energy required to confront unjust or objectionable Creators or circumstances.
We won’t put Matters of Conscience to a vote. Instead…
We Trust Fans to Be Honest
In all Matters of Conscience objections, Fans should simply contact us to request a cancellation of their pledge which will be granted at any time up to the close of a campaign.
While we may disagree, we won’t serve as the moral or ethical arbitrator either.
As a contractual matter, however, once a campaign closes the funds collected belong to the Creator and any refund would need to be processed through them.
If fans believe they have a good faith reason for believing an exception should be made in their particular case, for example for unforeseen personal hardship they may contact us at support@fanfuture.com and all determinations will be at the sole discretion of FanFuture.
