Our model is intended to be dynamic!
We encourage Fans and Creators to form a creative community full of passionate ideas—believing out of this interaction will arise amazing new futures.
This means that from time to time, a campaign may undergo changes AFTER Fans have already pledged.
However, not every change is of equal significance. To maintain the integrity of our site model, while encouraging a dynamic community of ever improving ideas, Fans who pledge to a campaign accept that their pledges are committed to that campaign so long as the central aim and landscape of the campaign remains the same.
Our model puts Fans at the heart of all we do!
Fans Determine the Significance of Changes
All pledging Fans of a campaign have an equal vote when it comes to determining whether a ‘change’ to the campaign is significant enough to warrant allowing all Fans the option to withdraw or reduce their existing pledges. Neither the timing nor amount of a Fan’s pledge gives any more or less weight to their vote.
In order for a change to be determined ‘significant’ it must be put to a vote and must receive the support of a simple majority (50% +1 vote) of ALL pledging Fans–regardless of whether they cast a vote or not.
Impact of a Determination of Significant Changes
If campaign changes are determined to be significant, all Fans will have the option to have their pledges cancelled, provided their request is made within 2 weeks of posted notice of the Fan vote having been made to the updates section of the campaign.
Our Model Trusts Fans to Remain Engaged
While we will always strive to alert Fans of any determination of a significant change to a campaign they’ve pledged toward, it is ultimately the Fan’s responsibility to remain aware of the current campaign status and details for any campaign they have pledged toward.
We advise Fans to keep their email contact information up-to-date and to regularly check-in on campaigns they have supported, particularly the UPDATES TAB on the campaign page where we will issue any important notices.
Significant Changes SURROUNDING a Campaign or Creator
While the majority of significant changes are likely to concern the core goal of the campaign itself, sometimes what ‘changes’ is broader and, frankly, more important.
Matters of Conscience
Sometimes what changes is the Fan community’s understanding & awareness of the Creator’s beliefs or actions, or of the cultural/political/social/moral/ethical/philosophical context of the campaign etc.
These changes can present really difficult situations for Fans who have previously pledged and now may feel that their pledge would be financially supporting a Creator or campaign that they find objectionable on serious personal grounds.
We do not intend the Fan community to be a moral jury, or to unfairly ask any Fans to bear the burden of time and energy required to confront unjust or objectionable Creators or circumstances.
We won’t put Matters of Conscience to a vote. Instead…
We Trust Fans to Be Honest
In all Matters of Conscience objections, Fans should simply contact us to request a cancellation of their pledge which will be granted at any time up to the close of a campaign.
While we may disagree, we won’t serve as the moral or ethical arbitrator either.
As a contractual matter, however, once a campaign closes the funds collected belong to the Creator and any refund would need to be processed through them.
We have our own Moral Compass too.
Although we hope to rely upon it sparingly, seeking instead to build a community of Fans who actively engage and take collective action against injustice, we do reserve the right to remove/suspend/modify any campaign we find beyond the pale or beneath the dignity of the community we hope to foster here.
This does not mean however, that we agree with the actions or beliefs of every campaign or Creator on our site.
There are lines to be sure, but we have tried to create a large tent at FanFuture where the campaigns and Creators safely and respectfully reflect the broader community of Fans with all our diverse beliefs and values.
